Domain facts

Domain

A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet

Primary Domain

A primary domain is the main domain your account is primarily associated with or is named after. Usually, this is the very first domain that you used in your account. It's also the domain that you use to log into your hosting account.

Subdomain

In the Domain Name System hierarchy, a subdomain is a domain that is a part of another domain. A subdomain is a prefix added to your original domain name, like a domain within a domain, usually following the form subdomain.example.com. They behave very similar to an addon domain and are often created to separate your website's different sections, such as blog.example.com or store.example.com.

Addon Domain

An addon domain is a fully functional domain that can be created from within your control panel. This addon domain is a new, unique website hosted in a new folder on your account so that you can host several domains from one control panel. You can give an addon domain email addresses, forwarders, and more the same way as a primary (main) domain on the account.

When you create an Addon domain, 3 things happen:

  1. A folder is created in the 'public_html' directory
  2. A subdomain is created for the primary domain and attached to the new folder
  3. The new domain name is associated with the subdomain

For example, if the primary domain was 'abc.com' and you assign the Addon Domain '123.com' to the folder '123', the following routes (URLs) would be true:

  • abc.com/123
  • 123.abc.com
  • 123.com

All three of these paths would access the same directory and show the same website. However, in concern to your website's viewers going to 123.com, there is no evidence that they are being routed through 123.abc.com, and everything will function as normal.

This all happens automatically when an Addon domain is assigned to an account; there is no need for further action necessary other than loading content into the addon domain folder.

Parked Domains

Domain parking is the registration of an Internet domain name without that domain being associated with any services such as e-mail or a website.

A parked domain is an alias of your primary domain — it points to the same website as your primary domain. Multiple domains, same website.

For example, if cars.com is your main website, you can purchase cars.net and assign it as a parked domain. If a visitor were to go to cars.net, they would see the same website as if they had typed cars.com.

In other words, both primarydomain.com/index.htm and parkeddomain.com/index.htm will point to the same webpage, "index.htm."

Maximum registration period  : 10 years

This is the maximum number of years that you can manually add to your domain registration.

Domain Transfer Period : 60 days

The Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy, applicable to all ICANN-accredited registrars, provides that registered name holders must be able to transfer their domain name registrations between registrars. You must wait 60 days after the initial registration or any previous transfers to initiate a transfer.

What Happens When a Domain Expires?

When a domain expires it becomes inactive immediately and all the services attached to it cease to function. You can’t make any updates to the domain while it is expired. The domain will remain available for reactivation at your regular domain rate under your list of Expired Domains.

Grace period

After a domain expires, it enters a grace period. In this period, the domain is disabled but it’s still possible to renew it from the DN Simple account at no extra cost.

Currently,  – our registrar - offers a non-guaranteed 30-day grace period for renewal for most TLDs. There is no guaranteed grace period. Once a domain expires, registar may dispose of it at any time according to the registration agreement. After the grace period elapses, the domain may go into a redemption grace period.

Redemption Period : 30 days

After a domain name registration expires, and after the grace period, when the previous owner can still renew the domain, but usually at a higher price.

Availability wait period : 35 days

When a domain is deleted, you must wait a certain number of days before the domain is available to the public for registration.

Deletion period

Pending Delete” refers to the 5-day time frame after redemption. During this time the registry holds the domain and it cannot be recovered. Once the Registry deletes the domain it’s available on a first-come first-served basis for anyone to purchase as a new domain.

Registrar-Lock

REGISTRAR-LOCK is a status code that can be set on an Internet domain name by the sponsoring registrar of the domain name. This is usually done in order to prevent unauthorized, unwanted or accidental changes to the domain name

Domain Privacy

A feature often provided by domain registrars that hides the domain name owner information from the search results of a WHOIS inquiry.
